Blackwell Burke P.A. Attorney Spiwe L. Jefferson and Partner Corey L. Gordon joined members of the legal community at the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers (MABL) organized Silent Protest in Solidarity at Hennepin County Government Center earlier this month. Jefferson is co-chair of the Communications Committee, and a past president, treasurer and board member of MABL. She was part of the MABL team that organized attorneys to gather during the first court appearance of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who was charged with second-degree murder in the death of George Floyd which has brought on a movement in the United States and across the world. Three other officers were charged with aiding and abetting.
“We were proud to join attorneys from throughout the community at this silent protest,” said Jefferson. “MABL felt strongly that we needed to take a stand. As lawyers, we are taught to be particular about the use of our words, but in this case, there was even more power in so many lawyers standing in silence.” More than 200 attorneys from all walks of the legal profession came out to stand with MABL, taking a knee collectively to commemorate the long minutes during which Chauvin knelt on Mr. Floyd’s neck.
